The Spring Poetry Festival at Mark Oliphant College
Celebrating Student Voice Through Poetry
Mark Oliphant College’s first annual Spring Poetry Festival Competition has been an outstanding success, with more than 50 students putting pen to paper to share their creativity, perspectives and voices through poetry.
Launched in the lead-up to Book Week, the competition provided students with an opportunity to explore creative writing, express their ideas and experiences, and have their work recognised and celebrated within the College community.
Outstanding Student Participation
The response from students was fantastic, with more than 50 individual poems submitted from across the College.
From these entries, 25 outstanding poems were selected to represent Mark Oliphant College in the statewide Spring Poetry Festival competition, run by the South Australian English Teachers Association (SAETA).
At College level, 10 students were recognised as winners, with awards presented across the Senior Years, Middle Years and Independent categories.
The quality and diversity of the submissions made judging an incredibly difficult task. From thoughtful and reflective pieces to poems filled with humour, imagination and powerful messages, our students demonstrated an impressive range of creative voices.
Celebrating Our Young Poets
Our students’ achievements were also celebrated as part of the College’s Arts Week, with winning poems displayed at the Art Exhibition and selected pieces performed at the Arts Showcase.
These opportunities allowed our students to see their writing move beyond the classroom and be shared with the wider College community.
Introducing the Mark Oliphant College Poetry Anthology
Building on the success of the inaugural competition, we are incredibly proud to introduce the first annual Mark Oliphant College Poetry Anthology.
The anthology features the 10 winning poems, alongside a further 30 finalist and honourable mention entries, creating a collection that showcases the remarkable range of ideas, experiences and perspectives represented in our students’ writing.
The anthology will soon be available in the College Library, providing a lasting celebration of our emerging writers and their creativity.
A New College Tradition
The Spring Poetry Festival has provided students with an authentic opportunity to create, express themselves, share their perspectives and have their work celebrated.
Most importantly, every student who entered contributed to the success of our first competition. Whether their poem received an award, was selected as a finalist or simply represented the courage to share something they had written, each contribution helped establish what we hope will become a much-loved annual tradition at Mark Oliphant College.
A special acknowledgement goes to English Coordinator Amy Forester for creating and leading this wonderful initiative and providing our students with an opportunity to have their voices heard.
